Always look at previous design work. This seems like a given, but just because someone says they can put together a website on Wix or Squarespace, doesn't mean you should hire them. Do-it-yourself templates create a bland, undistinguishable website that says the same about your business. Research website designers near you, and make sure you like their previous work before hiring them to design your business website.

The problem with some designers is they are creative, but because they don't follow a process, they are on again, off again. Your don't know what you're going to get, or when they are going to finish, or even if they are a full time designer. They may be moonlighting, and no condemnation there, but you want to make sure they have a process to get the job done on time and done well the first time. I can't tell you how many people complain because they are now on the 5th designer after the first 4 didn't finish, vanished, or didn't follow through in a timely manner. Make sure the company you hire to do your website has a process in place and a timeline set for completion.


3) Website design timeline

Having a timeline and a commitment in place for when the website design will be complete is key. Make sure you have a commitment from the designer to finish by a certain date and hold them to it. Now of course, I have seen many website design projects delayed by the business as well, so make sure you are on top of getting photos, assets, copy approved for your designer so there is no further delays.


4) Website editing and proofing process

Make sure you know upfront what type of proof and design changes are included in the website designer's quote. Some website designers will allow one round of edits, some will allow none, and others will work with you to make your website designed to your exact specs. Knowing this upfront is key to your satisfaction.


5) Ongoing website support

I recommend businesses get ongoing website support. Why spend money on a new website only to let it sit online and collect dust. You need ongoing support, additional pages, new content, blog posts, customer testimonials and more. A website today is not a static asset, it is an ever changing, growing part of your business.
